Foreign currency lab open for trading

University Business, Sept, 2008 by Michele Herrmann

MOST BUSINESS SCHOOLS TEACH ABOUT foreign currency exchange through lectures and textbooks, but the University of Scranton (Pa.) is Letting students get their hands, virtually, on trading.

This fall, the university will open a simulated trading laboratory to help students learn what influences foreign currency trading by analyzing real-time data feeds and currency trading software to make “trades.”

“They will be acting during much of the course as real world traders,” says Ken Lord, associate dean of Scranton’s Kania School of Management.

Developed by Scranton adjunct professor Robert Columbo and Ioannis Kallianiotis, a Scranton economics/finance professor, the lab will simulate a stock market trading room floor with a dozen trading team workstations, overhead displays, and digital projection systems. Two accompanying courses are being created.

To enhance the “real world” simulation, the lab software will record international trading data (which occurs while American exchanges are closed) to play back in class. Students can then test their trading smarts as if it were in real time.

Scranton’s lab is considered an educational first. The program can be used to train staff at multinational financial service corporations

NWHRC Health Center – Epilepsy, Feb 7, 2008

Epilepsy, a central nervous system disorder, is a life-altering condition for which there is no cure and no single defined cause. What we do know is that injury to and infections in the brain both before and after birth can cause epilepsy. Taking certain safety precautions may help to prevent epilepsy:

Avoid injury or trauma to the head. Use seatbelts, put children in car seats and use helmets when bicycling or skateboarding.

Avoid illegal drugs and toxic substances. Exposure to lead and carbon monoxide is known to cause seizures. Illegal drug use and overdoses of prescription drugs, such as antidepressants, may also cause seizures.

Practice good prenatal care. Treatment of high blood pressure and infections during pregnancy go a long way toward preventing neurological damage to unborn babies.

Treasury wants to control derivatives

Deseret News (Salt Lake City), May 14, 2009 by Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is asking Congress to extend its oversight of the financial system to include the shadowy market of derivatives, the kind of complex financial instruments that helped bring down the giant insurer AIG.

In a two-page letter sent Wednesday to congressional leaders, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said he wants to create a central electronic-based system that would track the buying and selling of derivatives. He also wants to ensure that financial firms selling the instruments have enough capital on hand in case they default and subject them to stringent standards of conduct and new reporting requirements.

Gifts

Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, Dec, 2008 by V. Susan Carroll

For many of us, the end of the calendar year is a time of gift giving during which most of us become caught up in the spirit. We share our abundance with those we love, those with whom we work, and those who may not be as fortunate. Gifts are exchanged in the spirit of holiday giving, of religious celebrations, and just for the sheer fun of it. Gifts run the gamut from a simple hug–one size fits all, and no one minds if you return it–to lovingly baked and decorated edible treats.

As nurses, we are year-round gift givers
