iPhone playing cards.(Brief article)
Sat ,31/10/2009Macworld, November, 2009 by Frakes, Dan
Last year I got a kick out of Meninos’s iPhone-icon coasters. The company, which makes a full line of Mac-, iPhone-, and computing-focused household items, has followed up with a $25 set of iPhone-inspired playing cards. Made of PVC plastic, each washable 2.2-by-3.5-inch card assumes an iPhone’s shape and look, complete with shiny bezel. The “screen” of each card displays the face of a playing card in a standard free software data recovery 52-card deck. (A humorous touch: The face cards–jack, queen, and king–also show the iPhone’s Decline and Answer buttons for incoming calls.) Now you’ll really want to know what’s on the iPhone your friend is holding (www.meninos.us)
Justin Martyr and His Worlds

Justin Martyr and His Worlds. Edited by Sara Parvis & Paul Foster. Minneapolis, MN: Fortress Press, 2007. Pp. xviii 246. Cloth, $35.00.
Justin Martyr and His Worlds represents the fruit of a July 2006 conference of the same title sponsored by the University of Edinburgh. The threefold purpose of this volume is to summarize the current state of Justin scholarship, to advance Justin studies, and to encourage a new generation of scholars to undertake the study of Justin. The fourteen separate contributions to this book have been thoughtfully arranged under three headings: Justin and his text, Justin and his bible, and Justin and his traditions.
The first section, Justin and his text, brings together three essays which treat the textual transmission of Justin’s corpus. Michael Slusser (chapter 1) helpfully orients the reader to the last half-century of scholarship on Justin by isolating a philosophical strand and a source critical strand. In chapter 2 Paul Parvis argues that 2 Apol. 15-16 is a displaced folio from the end of the First Apology, which is really not an “apology” at all in terms of genre, but rather a libellus or “petition.” Moreover, the Second Apology is a somewhat random collection of extracts and deletions from material original anthony robbins free uk book to the First Apology. The whole collection was probably posthumously edited by Justin’s followers, at which time the genre “apology” developed. All of this may sound a bit fanciful at first blush, but Parvis presents his case splendidly. Meanwhile, Denis Minns (chapter 3) accepts Parvis’s conclusions and further argues that the Rescript of Hadrian (see 1 Apol
Heart Institute joins blood-pressure study

MURRAY — Researchers from the Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center will take part in a nine-year, $114 million study to determine whether a lower blood-pressure goal further cuts the risk of disease.
The National Institutes of Health is leading the study, hoping to determine whether maintaining blood-pressure levels exercise plans lower than current recommendations further reduces the risk of cardiovascular and kidney diseases, as well as age-related cognitive decline in patients.
Called the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial, or SPRINT, the study will be conducted in more than 80 clinical sites across the country.
Current clinical guidelines recommend systolic pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) of less than 140 millimeters of mercury for healthy adults, and 130 for adults with kidney disease or diabetes.
SPRINT will evaluate the potential benefits of maintaining systolic blood pressure at less than 120 for adults who are at risk for heart disease or kidney disease. The study will also assess possible risks of that therapeutic strategy.
The clinical trial is based in large part on observational studies that suggest that maintaining a lower blood-pressure level than is currently recommended reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, according to Dr. Brent Muhlestein, director of cardiac research at the heart institute and principal investigator at the medical center.
Enrollment for SPRINT is expected to begin in fall 2010. More than 7,500 patients will be enrolled.
Steinbrenner attends World Series opener
Sat ,31/10/20090 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Oct 29, 2009 | by Jay Cohen Associated Press
NEW YORK — George Steinbrenner watched Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night from his suite above home plate, returning to the new Yankee Stadium for the first time since opening day.
Steinbrenner arrived about 45 minutes before the first pitch against the Philadelphia Phillies and was driven in a dark minivan with tinted windows all the way to the elevators that lead up the suites at the $1.5 billion palace.
The frail owner, who has made few public appearances since his health deteriorated, was helped out of his car and into a wheelchair in the stadium tunnel. General manager Brian Cashman then accompanied him on the elevator trip to his box.
Steinbrenner has kept a low profile since turning over the day- to-day operation of the team disability vehicle to his son, Hal Steinbrenner, last November. He sat in the last row of his box during the first inning and took time to visit with Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra in the middle of the game.
The Yankees have said throughout the postseason that they hope to win a seventh World Series title for the 79-year-old Steinbrenner, who bought the team in 1973. The grounds crew donned T-shirts that read “WIN IT FOR THE BOSS” on the front and 27 on the back — New York is seeking its 27th crown overall.
PLAYERS ONLY: The tunnel that circles the field at Yankee Stadium was swarming with Secret Service agents before the World Series opener with first lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, wife of the vice president, on hand for a ceremony honoring the nation’s veterans.
Security briefly cleared out an area for Obama and Biden, stopping everyone who tried to walk through the tunnel to the other side. But Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra was allowed through, walking by without even looking at any of the guards.
Reggie Jackson and Bernie Williams also made their way to the other side.
PRICEY TIX: Want to go to a World Series game? Try the Big Apple. The average ticket price for the first two games at Yankee Stadium was $600 on Wednesday afternoon, compared with $1,400 for Games 3-5 in Citizens Bank Park
Goldsource Receives Manitoba Permits; Updates Border Technical Report Status
Sat ,31/10/2009Market Wire, October, 2009
Goldsource Mines Inc. (“Goldsource” or the “Company”) (TSX VENTURE: GXS)(FRANKFURT: G5M) is pleased to report that it has received 8 Quarry permits from the Manitoba Science, Technology, Energy and Mines Branch totalling approximately 44,670 hectares. The issuance of the permits is in response to the Company’s applications that have been outstanding for up to 14 months. The Company is now in a position to proceed with its planned exploration programs in Manitoba.
Following its major coal discovery at the Border Property in Saskatchewan in the spring of 2008, Goldsource carried out research of various Manitoba databases and identified a number of reported coal occurrences in west-central Manitoba. The Company subsequently carried out airborne geophysical surveys over selected areas to better define potential coal bearing sub-basins using the Company’s proprietary geophysical signatures developed at the nearby Border Project. The historical data reported several coal occurrences within the Cretaceous Mannville Group ranging in thickness from 1 to 20 metres at depths of 14 to 90 metres below surface. The Company drilled five reconnaissance holes on private land in late 2008, which confirmed the historical data in certain areas. The Company is making applications for a winter exploration program of approximately 20 drill holes that will further confirm the extent of the Manitoba coal deposits and provide information on coal quality.
Border Technical Report Status:
The NI 43-101 Technical Report being prepared by independent Qualified Persons for the Border Project is nearing completion. This report will include resource estimations for the Border Property and provide quality characteristics for each of the 15 coal deposits discovered to date in the Border Property. The report had been expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter, however, the addition of the late summer drill results and proximate laboratory analysis delayed compilation of the coal quality estimations for each deposit. Goldsource will announce the resource estimations and compiled coal quality data data management software as soon as they are available and is required to file the NI 43-101 Technical Report within 45 days after that announcement.
The Company is currently making plans to drill additional high priority targets this winter on the Border Property. Environmental permitting is being completed to implement initial drilling of targets identified by recent Fugro airborne geophysics on the Company’s Ballantyne property in Saskatchewan and on the Manitoba properties.

Oven blaze alarm calls
Sat ,31/10/2009Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Oct 29, 2009
A FIRE broke out at a house after an oven was accidentally left on.
The blaze happened at a two-storey mid-terrace home in Parliament Street, Hebburn, South Tyneside, at 6.15pm yesterday.
The kitchen and other parts of the property became smoke-logged. There was no-one inside.
A spokesman from Hebburn fire station said: “A pan had been left in the oven and the appliance was left on by mistake.
“The property had a working smoke alarm which alerted the neighbours to the fire and they called us. We searched the house and found there was no-one inside.
“Had it not been for the smoke alarm, the family could have found themselves homeless.” Firefighters were also called out after an electrical fault sparked a separate blaze in a house in Northumberland.
Two crews from Blyth and Cramlington stations attended the property in Ingoe Close, Blyth, at around 7pm yesterday.
An extractor unit had caught fire and flames spread to the living room.
No-one was inside the property at the time.
The house was badly damaged by smoke.
Why your gyno needs to know you’re Gay.(Health ADVICE)(gynecologist)
Sat ,31/10/2009Curve, November, 2009 by Bale, Kim
Cold metal stirrups and paper irritable bowel symptoms gowns don’t exactly motivate women to schedule regular trips to their gynecologist. And, as if the poking and prodding weren’t uncomfortable enough, the blunt personal questions can take the situation from bearable to awkward in a matter of seconds. Have you been sexually active? Do you use contraceptives? How many partners have you had? And then there’s the question your doctor should be asking: What is your sexual orientation?
“[Your gynecologist] would need to know about your orientation in terms of counseling you about sexually transmitted diseases and the necessity for pap smears,” says Dr. Kate O’Hanlan (left), who practices gynecologic oncology, surgery and endoscopy in Portola Valley, Calif
